THE SCAR PROJECT: Breast Cancer is not a Pink Ribbon

http://www.thescarproject.org/

A series of large-scale portraits of young breast cancer survivors shot by fashion photographer David Jay. Primarily an awareness raising campaign, The SCAR Project puts a raw, unflinching face on early onset breast cancer while paying tribute to the courage and spirit of so many brave young [people].

Up until tonight I never knew exactly what breast cancer survivors looked like after surgery. These courageous [people] inspire, move and tastefully challenge our notions of beauty. How is it that cancer can reak such havoc on their bodies, yet they are still so unspeakably gorgeous?

Looking at these photos, I can’t imagine anyone trying to justify “Save the Boobies” merchandise. It is not about the boobies. It is about all these people.

Because I spend so much time now in a very professional, gender normative work environment, I have to remind myself that I love weird people, I am weird, I want to be weird, and being normal is truly horrifying. I’m thinking of that experience of seeing someone on the street or on the bus who is working some kind of weird, non-normative look and feeling some delight and relief, like the person’s existence is making space for you. I have often felt that way when I see other visibly queer or visibly trans people, or other kinds of rule-breakers. It’s beautiful to see people taking those risks and its wonderful to have those moments of mutual recognition with a stranger in the midst of a hostile world.

A photo of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, as described on the National Portrait Gallery’s Web site, says, ‘Beginning with Stein’s radical haircut of 1926, the women created an homme-femme style, a lesbian mode of dressing still in fashion today.’
