why do you come here, when you know i’ve got troubles enough?
why do you call me, when you know i can’t answer the phone? …
are you so strong or is all the weakness in me?

Indigo Girls - Power Of Two by IndigoGirlsVEVO

if we ever leave a legacy, it’s that we loved each other well.

katebomz:

The Nile Project is a multicultural musical platform that will bring together hip-hop and traditional musicians living in the Nile countries (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Egypt) to play and record music, to tour down the river and its source lakes on a boat made of recycled water bottles, and to share an experience that will connect the peoples of the river.

Meklit and Mina realized that though East Africa’s Nile cultures have shared millenia of history, today they do not know very much about each other. They decided to start this musical project so that the people of the river could get to know their neighbors through a mutual sharing of stories, sound, music, mythology, and culture.

SARABAH | Women Make Movies | Trailer (by WMMNYC)

Rapper, singer and activist, Sister Fa is hero to young women in Senegal and an unstoppable force for social change. A childhood victim of female genital cutting (FGC), she decided to tackle the issue by starting a grassroots campaign, “Education Without Excision,” which uses her music and persuasive powers to end the practice. But until 2010 there’s one place she had never brought her message — back home to her own village of Thionck Essyl, where she fears rejection. Sarabah follows Sister Fa on this challenging journey, where she speaks out passionately to female elders and students alike, and stages a rousing concert that has the community on its feet. A portrait of an artist as activist, Sarabah shows the extraordinary resilience, passion and creativity of a woman who boldly challenges gender and cultural norms. It’s an inspiring story of courage, hope and change.

If I hadn’t been there at the time, online I might wonder whether it was possible to be anything but happy, and dancing, in the 80’s.

Rye Rye - We R Who We R (remix) (by FemRappers

So my 13 yr old niece Bee is home sick with Whooping Cough, as am I. She wanted me to search music on You Tube, so then we got to Rye Rye, and had fun conversations about re-appropriation.

Then I did her nails, and felt guilty about introducing the brightest girl in my families’ next generation to the practice of female bonding over pop and personal grooming.

OTOH, she did deliver a constant stream of critically aware snark about what “most people” expect from teenage girls, body image, race relations at her school dances and why she doesn’t care about being fat as much as she cares about “boring” adults who expect her to be into hip-hop, athletics and fat hate - but dismiss her real self-perception and ambitions as a writer who’s into science.

So I guess that’s OK.

Wonder [by NatalieMerchantVideo]

Doctors have come from distant cities
Just to see me
Stand over my bed
Disbelieving what they’re seeing

They say I must be one of the wonders
Of god’s own creation
And as far as they can see they can offer
No explanation

Newspapers ask intimate questions
Want confessions
They reach into my head
To steal the glory of my story

They say I must be one of the wonders
Of god’s own creation
And as far as they can see they can offer
No explanation

O, I believe
Fate smiled and destiny
Laughed as she came to my cradle
Know this child will be able
Laughed as my body she lifted
Know this child will be gifted
With love, with patience and with faith
She’ll make her way

People see me
I’m a challenge to your balance
I’m over your heads
How I confound you and astound you
To know I must be one of the wonders
Of god’s own creation
And as far as you can see you can offer me
No explanation

O, I believe
Fate smiled and destiny
Laughed as she came to my cradle
Know this child will be able
Laughed as she came to my mother
Know this child will not suffer
Laughed as my body she lifted
Know this child will be gifted
With love, with patience and with faith
She’ll make her way
